Claude Monet

Woman with a Parasol

US$ 609.00

Camille Monet and their son Jean stand on a grassy rise, wind pushing at her veil and skirts while clouds move fast behind them. Monet painted it outdoors in a single sitting, working quickly to catch the light before it changed, and placed his models against the sky so nothing would compete with the movement of the air. It is one of the few Impressionist paintings that makes weather itself the subject.

Artist

Claude Monet (1840-1926) founded and never abandoned Impressionism, spending sixty years trying to paint the exact sensation of light at a specific moment. He worked outdoors in all conditions, often on several canvases at once so he could switch as the light shifted, and his 1874 exhibition gave the movement its name. His late water lily paintings are now considered a bridge to abstraction.
