Frederic Edwin Church (1826-1900) was the only pupil Thomas Cole ever took, and became the leading painter of the Hudson River School’s second generation. He travelled twice to South America following the route of Alexander von Humboldt, filling sketchbooks with plants, rock and light, then assembled the studies into vast studio compositions. When this canvas was exhibited in New York in 1859, thousands queued and paid admission to see it.
