Johannes Vermeer

View of Delft

US$ 627.00

Delft seen across the harbour on a morning of broken cloud, half the town in shadow and half caught in sudden light, the New Church tower holding the sun. Vermeer built the reflections and the sandy quay from thick dabs of paint that resolve into exactness at a distance. Proust called it the most beautiful painting in the world and wrote a character’s death around a detail of its wall.

Artist

Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675) painted perhaps thirty-six pictures in his life, nearly all of them quiet interiors with a woman near a window. He worked slowly, sold little, left his widow in debt, and was almost wholly forgotten for two centuries until a French critic rediscovered him in the 1860s. Only two of his surviving paintings are outdoor scenes, and this is the greater of the pair.
