Artist
Jan van Eyck (c.1390-1441) worked as court painter and confidential envoy to Philip the Good of Burgundy, travelling on diplomatic missions as far as Portugal. His command of oil glazes allowed a density of observed detail no earlier European painter had achieved. Fewer than two dozen works are securely attributed to him, and most are signed with an unusual personal motto.
