Artist
Caravaggio (1571-1610) worked without preparatory drawings, straight onto the canvas from models he found in the streets and taverns of Rome, and lit them as though a shutter had just been opened in a dark room. That method — tenebrism — changed European painting within a decade. His life was as abrupt as his method: repeated arrests, a killing after a brawl, years on the run, and death at thirty-eight while trying to reach a papal pardon.
