Artist
Sandro Botticelli (c. 1445-1510) worked at the centre of Medici Florence, painting mythologies charged with the Neoplatonic philosophy then being argued over in the city’s academies. In later life he fell under the influence of the preacher Savonarola, turned to severe religious subjects, and is said to have burned some of his own earlier work. He died largely forgotten, and it took the Pre-Raphaelites in the nineteenth century to restore him.
