Artist
Viktor Vasnetsov (1848-1926) was the son of a village priest and became the painter who gave Russian folklore its visual form, turning to the byliny — the old oral epics — at a time when Russian art was dominated by social realism. He worked on this canvas on and off for nearly twenty years. Generations of Russian children have known these three figures from schoolbooks.
