Artist
Fra Angelico (c. 1395-1455) was a Dominican friar who painted, and was beatified by the Catholic Church five centuries later. He worked at the exact moment when medieval gold-ground painting met the new Florentine perspective, and he used both without apparent strain. Vasari wrote that he never took up a brush without prayer and never painted a crucifix without weeping.
