Artist
Tawaraya Sotatsu (active c. 1600-1640) ran a fan-painting workshop in Kyoto and, with the calligrapher Hon’ami Koetsu, founded the Rinpa school — a manner defined by bold flat shapes, gold-leaf grounds and an unusual willingness to leave space empty. Almost nothing is known of his life, not even his dates. His screens influenced Japanese design for three centuries and were later admired by the Art Nouveau painters of Europe.
