The three daughters of Zeus stand linked in a circle, painted with the softness and weight Rubens gave all his figures, beneath a garland and a sky of thin cloud. He used his young second wife Helena Fourment as the model for the figure on the left. Kept for himself until his death, it is among the most personal pictures he made, and among the most openly joyful.

Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) ran the busiest studio in Europe, spoke six languages and worked as a diplomat between the courts of Spain and England, receiving a knighthood from both. His painting is all warmth and motion — flesh, fabric and foliage handled with a loaded brush and an appetite that no northern contemporary matched. This canvas hung in his own house and he never sold it.
