Raphael

Portrait of Baldassare Castiglione

US$ 774.00

The author of The Book of the Courtier sits in grey, black and white velvet against a plain ground, entirely composed, looking calmly out. Raphael strips out every prop and lets restraint do the work — the picture is a demonstration of exactly the self-possession Castiglione’s book was recommending. Rembrandt sketched it; Rubens copied it; Matisse studied it.
