Artist
Frans Hals (c. 1582-1666) painted with a speed and visible looseness that no contemporary matched — brushstrokes left frankly on the surface, catching a moment rather than composing one. He worked in Haarlem his whole life, produced a huge number of portraits, and still died in poverty. Manet and the Impressionists rediscovered him two centuries later and claimed him as an ancestor.
