Artist
Amedeo Modigliani (1884-1920) painted almost exclusively portraits and nudes, treating the human face as a formal problem rather than a psychological one, and arriving at the elongated, mask-like manner that defines his work. Born in Livorno to a Sephardic Jewish family, he moved to Paris in 1906 and worked there in poverty for the rest of his short life. He sculpted seriously for several years before dust from the stone worsened his tuberculosis and forced him back to painting.
