Artist
Rembrandt van Rijn (1606–1669) is the towering figure of the Dutch Golden Age, a painter and etcher whose handling of light and shadow gave ordinary faces the weight of drama. He received the commission for this militia group portrait around 1640, at the height of his career and prosperity — the bankruptcy and hardship of his later years were still ahead. The canvas was cut down on all four sides in 1715 to fit a wall in Amsterdam’s Town Hall, losing two figures from the left edge.
