Caravaggio

Judith Beheading Holofernes

US$ 645.00

Judith recoils even as she saws through the general’s neck, her expression caught between resolve and disgust while her elderly maid waits with the cloth. Caravaggio refuses to make the act heroic or clean — the blood arcs, the body convulses, and everyone in the picture registers the physical difficulty of it. He reportedly used a known Roman courtesan as the model for Judith.

Caravaggio (1571-1610) painted this early in his Roman career, and its unflinching physicality set the terms for the Baroque treatment of violence across Europe. Artemisia Gentileschi’s later version of the same subject responds directly to it. His own life ended in flight and obscurity on the Tuscan coast at 38.
