Artist
Grant Wood (1891-1942) was the leading figure of the American Regionalist movement, which turned away from European modernism to paint the farms and small towns of the Midwest on their own terms. He taught at the University of Iowa and drew heavily on the flat, precise style of early Northern Renaissance painting he had studied in Europe. American Gothic made him famous almost overnight in 1930.
