Artist
Raja Ravi Varma (1848-1906) was born into the royal house of Travancore and became the first Indian painter to apply European oil technique and academic realism to Indian literary and mythological subjects. He later founded a lithographic press in Bombay so his images could reach ordinary households as affordable prints, which shaped popular Indian iconography more than any single artist before or since. His work remains hugely popular while also drawing serious scholarly debate about colonial influence on Indian art.
