Artist
Diego Velázquez (1599–1660) served as court painter to Philip IV of Spain for most of his working life, and turned the constraints of that role into the most quietly radical painting of the Spanish Golden Age. He worked with a loaded brush and an economy that looks almost careless up close and resolves into exactness at a distance — a technique that made him a hero to Manet, Whistler and Picasso alike.
