Artist
Albert Bierstadt (1830–1902) was born in Germany, raised in Massachusetts and made his name painting the American West on a scale nobody had attempted. He travelled with survey expeditions, made small oil sketches on site, then worked them up into enormous studio canvases that toured as paid attractions. Audiences queued to see them. The luminous, theatrical light he gave the Rockies and the Sierra shaped how a generation imagined the continent.
