Artist
El Greco (1541-1614) was born on Crete, trained in the Byzantine icon tradition, absorbed Titian and Tintoretto in Venice, then settled in Toledo for the last thirty-seven years of his life. His elongated figures and cold acid colour looked like errors to later centuries, and he was largely dismissed until Cezanne and Picasso recognised what he had been doing. He is now read as one of the most original painters who ever lived.
