Artist
John Singer Sargent (1856–1925) was born in Florence to American parents and trained in Paris, becoming the most sought-after portraitist of his generation on both sides of the Atlantic. He painted this portrait without a commission, pursuing the sitter — the Parisian socialite Virginie Gautreau — because he wanted the subject for himself. Its reception at the 1884 Salon was hostile enough that he left Paris for London. He kept the canvas for over thirty years before selling it to the Metropolitan Museum, regarding it as among the finest things he had done.
