Francisco de Goya (1746-1828) painted this and its unclothed companion for Manuel Godoy, the Spanish prime minister, who kept them in a private cabinet with a mechanism to swap one for the other. The Inquisition later seized both and summoned Goya to explain himself. He gave no useful answer and the identity of the sitter has never been settled.
