The canvas splits into two halves: a lighter left side built from yellow rectangles and thin verticals, and a denser right side where a blue circle anchors a tangle of curves and grids. Kandinsky wrote about the three primary colours as having distinct temperaments, and the picture stages a confrontation between them rather than a harmony. It was painted at the height of his Bauhaus years.

Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944) moved toward complete abstraction earlier and more deliberately than almost any of his contemporaries, arguing in his writings that colour and form could carry meaning without depicting anything at all. His years teaching at the Bauhaus in Weimar and Dessau produced his most geometrically rigorous work. He held Russian, German and finally French citizenship as politics repeatedly displaced him.
