Artist
Edvard Munch (1863-1944) lost his mother and sister to tuberculosis in childhood and spent his career painting anxiety, desire and mortality as though they were weather. This canvas belongs to the Frieze of Life, the cycle he worked on for decades and which also produced The Scream. He said he painted not what he saw but what he had seen.
