Artist
Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944) trained as a lawyer and did not paint seriously until his thirties, then went on to write the founding text of abstract art, Concerning the Spiritual in Art. He taught at the Bauhaus through the 1920s, and this canvas belongs to that period — geometry replacing the swirling looseness of his earlier work. He held that colours and shapes produce effects on the soul in the same way musical notes do.
