George Stubbs

Whistlejacket

US$ 684.00

A life-size Arabian stallion rears against a plain buff ground — no landscape, no rider, no saddle, nothing but the horse. The story goes that Stubbs left the background blank deliberately and the Marquess of Rockingham agreed. Nearly three metres tall in the original, and startling in its emptiness; it looks far more modern than 1762.

Artist

George Stubbs (1724-1806) taught himself anatomy by dissecting horses in a Lincolnshire barn over eighteen months, hoisting the carcasses on pulleys and drawing them layer by layer. The book he published from it was used by veterinary surgeons for a century. No painter before or since has understood the animal’s structure as thoroughly, and it shows in every line.
