Artist
John Everett Millais (1829–1896) was the youngest student ever admitted to the Royal Academy Schools and a founding member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, formed in 1848 to reject what its members saw as the slick artificiality of academic painting. Their answer was minute observation of nature and brilliant, jewel-like colour. Millais painted the river setting of this picture over five months on the banks of the Hogsmill in Surrey, insect bites and all.
