Artist
Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) painted for only the last decade of his life, much of it in poverty and worsening mental illness, yet produced over 2,000 works in that span. His time in Arles and Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, including a year spent in a psychiatric hospital, produced the intensely coloured, thickly painted landscapes he is best known for today. He sold almost nothing while alive and is now among the most valued painters in history.
