Ivan Shishkin

Morning in a Pine Forest

US$ 663.00

Morning mist among broken pines, with a family of bears at play on a fallen trunk — the bears were painted by his friend Konstantin Savitsky, whose signature the dealer later removed. It is possibly the most widely recognised painting in Russia, reproduced on everything from chocolate wrappers to postage stamps, and it remains a genuinely calm and generous picture.

Artist

Ivan Shishkin (1832-1898) was the great forest painter of Russian art and a leading member of the Peredvizhniki, the Wanderers, who broke from the imperial academy to take art to provincial audiences. He drew trees with the precision of a botanist and was criticised for it, which never troubled him. Few painters have looked as hard at bark, moss and the particular way light falls through conifers.
