A woman personifying spring stands among blossom in a South Indian sari, jewellery rendered with the same care as the face, her gaze turned slightly away from the viewer. Ravi Varma treated allegorical figures the way European academic painters treated theirs, but dressed and posed them unmistakably as Indian women.
