Artist
Hans Holbein the Younger (1497-1543) left Basel for England, became painter to the court of Henry VIII, and produced portraits of a precision that still feels almost photographic. He painted textiles, instruments and faces with the same unblinking attention. He died in London of plague at forty-five, having created the visual record by which the Tudor court is still recognised.
