Artist
J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851) began as a topographical watercolourist and ended painting canvases so dissolved into light and weather that his contemporaries accused him of leaving them unfinished. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from the age of fifteen and travelled constantly through Britain and Europe. He left his enormous studio holdings to the British nation, and Ruskin’s advocacy secured his reputation for the following century.
