Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919) painted the leisure of Parisian life — cafés, dances, boating parties, family gatherings — with a warmth and softness that set him apart from the cooler analytical light of Monet and Pissarro. He trained originally as a porcelain painter, and the decorative sensibility never left his work. In later life, arthritis forced him to have brushes strapped to his hands, and he kept painting regardless.
