Artist
Johannes Vermeer (1632–1675) spent almost his entire working life in the Dutch city of Delft, leaving behind only around thirty-five surviving paintings — a tiny output that nonetheless made him one of the most admired artists of the Dutch Golden Age. He is celebrated above all for his handling of daylight, which falls across his interiors with a softness no contemporary matched. Forgotten for nearly two centuries after his death, he was rediscovered by critics in the 1860s; this painting itself hung unrecognised until it was bought at auction in 1881 for a trivial sum.
