Jacob van Ruisdael

The Windmill at Wijk bij Duurstede

US$ 594.00

A windmill stands against piled cloud on the bank of the Lek, three small figures on the shore, the water broken by wind. Ruisdael gives the mill the weight of a monument and the sky nearly two-thirds of the picture. It is the single most reproduced Dutch landscape, and it hangs in the Rijksmuseum a few rooms from The Night Watch.

Artist

Jacob van Ruisdael (c. 1629-1682) was the greatest landscape painter of the Dutch Golden Age, and the one who gave the sky the leading role. He raised horizons, filled two-thirds of his canvases with weather, and turned a flat wet country into genuine drama. Constable and Turner both studied him closely; the entire English landscape tradition runs back through him.
