Artist
Hieronymus Bosch (c. 1450–1516) spent his whole life in the Dutch town of ‘s-Hertogenbosch, painting visions that no one before him had attempted and few since have matched. Where his contemporaries painted saints and donors, Bosch painted swarming, teeming worlds of hybrid creatures, impossible architecture and human folly. Almost nothing certain is known of his training or intentions, which has left five centuries of viewers free to argue over what he meant.
