Artist
Diego Velazquez (1599-1660) spent most of his career as court painter to Philip IV of Spain, producing portraits of the royal family alongside a small number of extraordinary set pieces including Las Meninas. His loose, economical handling of paint at close range was centuries ahead of its time and made him a hero to Manet and the Impressionists. Two long trips to Italy shaped his mature style.
