Georges de La Tour

The Magdalen with the Smoking Flame

US$ 609.00

Mary Magdalene sits with a skull in her lap, staring at a single oil lamp whose flame throws the only light in the picture and trails a thin line of smoke upward. La Tour removes every element that does not serve the flame. The result is closer to still life than to narrative religious painting.

Artist

Georges de La Tour (1593-1652) worked in the duchy of Lorraine and built almost his entire mature output around single candle or lamp light, reducing figures to simplified geometric masses. He was successful in his lifetime, then forgotten so completely that his name was only recovered in 1915. Roughly forty paintings are now attributed to him.
