Valentin Serov

Girl with Peaches

US$ 531.00

Vera Mamontova, aged eleven, sits at a table in a sunlit room with a peach in front of her, caught between one moment and the next. Serov worked on it for two months over a summer at Abramtsevo, and the whole picture is really about light moving across a white blouse and a scrubbed tabletop. It is the warmest thing in nineteenth-century Russian painting.

Artist

Valentin Serov (1865-1911) painted this at twenty-two and never quite escaped it — it made his reputation instantly and remained the work Russians know him by. He was the son of two composers, studied under Repin, and went on to become the most sought-after portraitist in Russia, painting the imperial family while privately supporting the artists who opposed them.
