Peter Paul Rubens

The Judgement of Paris

US$ 645.00

Paris sits with the golden apple while Juno, Venus and Minerva stand before him to be judged, Mercury looking on, the whole scene set in a soft wooded landscape. Rubens returned to the subject repeatedly across his career, and this version is among the most fully realised. The Spanish court reportedly found the goddesses too naked even by the standards of the day.

Artist

Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) combined enormous technical facility with real classical learning, and his mythological pictures are as much about the pleasure of painting flesh, fabric and landscape as about the stories they tell. He ran a workshop of specialists and often painted only the heads and hands himself on larger commissions. He also worked as a diplomat, negotiating between the Spanish Netherlands and England.
