Frans Hals

The Gypsy Girl

US$ 819.00

A young woman laughs sideways out of the frame, hair loose, shirt open, painted in strokes so fast and unblended that the whole thing looks improvised. Hals catches an expression a second before it changes, which is what makes his portraits feel modern three centuries later. The romantic title was attached long after his death.

Artist:

Frans Hals (c.1582-1666) painted with a speed and visible brushwork that no contemporary matched, catching laughter, tipsiness and momentary expression in a way that looks almost photographic. He spent his whole career in Haarlem, produced enormous civic group portraits, and died poor. The Impressionists claimed him as an ancestor.
