El Greco

The Disrobing of Christ

US$ 624.00

Christ in a brilliant crimson robe stands surrounded by a crush of helmeted soldiers and jeering faces pressed close on every side, his eyes raised while a man kneels below drilling the cross. El Greco compresses the space so violently that there is no air anywhere in the picture. The Toledo cathedral chapter sued him over it, objecting that the heads of the crowd rose above Christ’s.

Artist

El Greco (1541-1614) was born Domenikos Theotokopoulos on Crete, trained in the Byzantine icon tradition, studied in Venice and Rome, and settled in Toledo, where he developed the elongated figures and acidic colour that make his work instantly recognisable. He was largely dismissed as eccentric for three centuries. Modernist painters from Cezanne to Picasso claimed him as an ancestor.
