Artist
Paolo Veronese (1528-1588) filled Venetian walls with vast, crowded, silver-lit banquets full of musicians, dogs, dwarves and servants. Summoned before the Inquisition to explain such figures in a sacred scene, he declined to remove them and simply changed the painting’s title instead. He remained, with Titian and Tintoretto, one of the three painters who defined Venetian art in its greatest century.
