Artist
Caravaggio (1571-1610) transformed European painting by using ordinary, often coarse models for sacred subjects and lighting them with violent contrasts of dark and light. His life was as turbulent as his pictures — repeated arrests, a killing in Rome, years in exile in Naples, Malta and Sicily, and a death at 38 that remains unexplained. Painters across Europe imitated his manner within a generation of his death.
