Artist
Mary Cassatt (1844-1926) was the only American formally invited to exhibit with the French Impressionists, spending most of her career in Paris where she became close to Edgar Degas. She specialised in scenes of women and children, subjects considered minor by the academic hierarchy of the time, and painted them with a structural rigor drawn partly from her study of Japanese prints. Her advocacy also helped bring Impressionist painting into major American collections.
