Artist
Francisco de Goya (1746-1828) climbed from provincial beginnings to First Court Painter to the Spanish crown, then lost his hearing entirely at forty-six after a severe illness. The work that followed grew darker, stranger and far more modern than anything around it. He witnessed the Peninsular War at close range, and what he made of it broke with every convention for how history painting was supposed to look.
