Artist

Amrita Sher-Gil (1913-1941) was born in Budapest to a Hungarian mother and a Punjabi Sikh father, trained in Paris, and returned to India determined to paint Indian life without either colonial exoticism or academic sentiment. Her mature work drew on Ajanta frescoes and Mughal miniatures as much as on Gauguin and Cezanne, and she painted villagers and women with a gravity that had little precedent in Indian art. She died at 28; her paintings are now designated national art treasures by the Indian government.
