Artist
William-Adolphe Bouguereau (1825-1905) was the most successful academic painter of his age, winning every honour France could award, and was then dismissed for most of the twentieth century as everything modern art rebelled against. Recent decades have restored him. Whatever one makes of the sentiment, the technical control — particularly of flesh and water — has never been in doubt.
