Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) rented the Yellow House in Arles hoping to found an artists’ colony there with Paul Gauguin, a plan that collapsed within months amid the breakdown that led to his hospitalisation. The Bedroom, painted during that brief period of hope, is one of his most personal and widely reproduced images. He wrote that he wanted the picture’s simplicity to be a kind of rest for the mind.
