Artist
Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) painted for barely a decade, producing most of his best-known work in the last two years of his life in the south of France. He drew heavily on Japanese woodblock prints, borrowing their bold outlines, flat colour and off-centre compositions. He painted the Arles sunflower canvases in August 1888 while preparing the Yellow House for Paul Gauguin’s arrival, intending them as decoration for his friend’s bedroom. He worked quickly, racing the flowers as they wilted, and set himself the problem of how much a painting could be carried by a single colour.
